Hockey agent Shumi Babayev blames non-hockey factors for Avangard's semifinal loss to Lokomotiv, criticizing coach Guy Boucher and club management for their conduct.

Hockey agent Shumi Babayev has offered a pointed critique of Avangard Omsk's semifinal exit from the Gagarin Cup, attributing the team's loss to Lokomotiv (3-4 in the series) to factors beyond the on-ice action. In his assessment, the defeat was fundamentally a coaching failure, despite the team's strong season.

Babayev directly challenged the post-series comments from head coach Guy Boucher, who cited a lack of depth on the bench. The agent found these excuses unconvincing, noting that Boucher had consistently utilized an 18-player lineup throughout the season. Babayev emphasized that his criticism was not aimed at the club itself, acknowledging that several of his clients play for Avangard and delivered career-best performances.

The core of Babayev's argument centered on what he described as "things outside of hockey" that prevented the team from reaching the final. He pointed to a toxic atmosphere within the locker room, referencing one unnamed player who, during the team's successful run, boasted about the absence of previously "toxic" players like Tkachev and Boucher, only for the team's cohesion to collapse when adversity struck.

The agent also leveled serious accusations at the club's leadership. He alleged that some players were pressured to change their agents as a condition for signing contracts with Avangard. Furthermore, he criticized the head coach's behavior towards various stakeholders, including players from other teams, referees, and the league itself, labeling it "ugly."

Babayev extended his criticism to organizational decisions, claiming the club's hierarchy was dismantled to accommodate the coach. He cited the hiring of a coach from North America for their VHL affiliate, accompanied by a salary increase, as an example of prioritizing short-term results over the development of homegrown talent.

While expressing sympathy for the Avangard players who worked hard for a successful season, Babayev noted that fatigue had set in for some, like forward Corban Knight, by the series' end. He drew a contrast with Metallurg Magnitogorsk's loss, which he attributed purely to hockey-related mistakes and individual errors, implying Avangard's downfall was more complex.

The agent concluded by lamenting that his clients in Omsk were denied a shot at the championship, but accepted the outcome as it stood. His comments paint a picture of a talented team potentially undermined by internal discord and questionable management practices.
