Brazil's health agency Anvisa has mandated a recall of Ypê cleaning products due to potential microbiological contamination. The company disputes the decision, calling it arbitrary.

In a major regulatory move, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has ordered the immediate recall of numerous cleaning products from the popular brand Ypê. The decision, stemming from a factory inspection, halts the manufacturing, sale, distribution, and use of specific detergent, laundry, and disinfectant lines due to a risk of microbiological contamination.

The agency's action follows a four-day inspection at the Química Amparo production facility in Amparo, São Paulo. Inspectors identified significant failures in critical stages of the manufacturing process, specifically citing problems within the quality assurance, production, and control systems. These shortcomings were deemed to compromise Good Manufacturing Practices and indicate a potential for contamination by harmful microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

The recall specifically targets products from batches where the lot number ends with the digit '1'. This includes a wide range of items such as various Ypê dishwashing liquids, Tixan Ypê laundry detergents in multiple scents and formulations, and several disinfectant products under the Ypê and Atol brands. Consumers are advised to check the lot number, typically found under the label, on the base, or near the cap of the product packaging.

The company at the center of the dispute, Ypê, has responded with strong opposition. In an official statement, the manufacturer expressed "indignation" with Anvisa's decision, labeling it as "arbitrary and disproportionate." Ypê asserts that independent laboratory reports confirm its products are "totally safe and adequate for consumption" and has announced its intention to appeal the ruling within the ten-day window provided.

For consumers, the immediate guidance is clear: stop using any affected products immediately. Anvisa recommends contacting Ypê's Consumer Service (SAC) for information on the return and reimbursement process. However, early reports indicate that customers are facing significant difficulties reaching the company's support lines, with calls failing to connect or being abruptly terminated.

While the recall is in effect, several key questions remain unanswered by the authorities. Anvisa has not publicly detailed the specific irregularities discovered during its inspection, nor has it provided a concrete assessment of the actual health risks to consumers from the potential contamination. The process for a full consumer refund or product exchange is also unclear, leaving many in a state of uncertainty.

The situation is still evolving. Ypê's appeal will be reviewed, and further sanctions or measures could be forthcoming based on the outcome of the ongoing sanitary investigations. The agency's resolution, published as Resolution 1.834/2026, underscores the seriousness of the compliance failures found at the Amparo plant.
