Brazil's government aims to approve an increase in the mandatory biodiesel blend in diesel to 16% by year-end, with technical feasibility tests starting this month.

The Brazilian government is pushing to secure approval for a significant increase in the nation's mandatory biodiesel content in diesel fuel before the year concludes. The target is to raise the current blend from 15% to 16%, a mixture commonly referred to as B16.

This ambitious timeline hinges on the successful completion of critical technical evaluations. The Executive branch has scheduled the commencement of these essential tests for the current month. The primary goal of these trials is to thoroughly assess whether the higher biodiesel concentration can be implemented without causing any detrimental effects to the vast fleet of vehicles operating across the country.

The scale of the testing program is substantial, backed by significant financial resources. Approximately R$ 30 billion from the National Fund for Science and Technology (FNDCT) has been allocated to support these efforts, complemented by additional private sector investments.

The outcome of these tests is not merely informational; it is a mandatory prerequisite for any official policy change. The National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) requires concrete proof of the blend's technical viability before it can formally deliberate and decide on elevating the biodiesel content in diesel.

Should the tests confirm the feasibility of the B16 blend, the government's goal is to have the new standard approved and ready for implementation by the end of the year, marking a notable step in the country's biofuel policy.
