Phil Foden inspired Manchester City to a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, closing the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to two points with two matches

Manchester City cruised to a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, trimming Arsenal's lead at the top of the Premier League to just two points with both sides having played 36 matches. Phil Foden was the architect of a win that keeps City's title defence flickering, even if the fate of the trophy remains largely out of their hands. The hosts struck through Antoine Semenyo, Omar Marmoush, and Savinho, but it was Foden's creative brilliance that defined a contest City never looked like losing after a muted opening.

Pep Guardiola made six changes from the side that had breezed past Brentford, leaving Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki, and Jérémy Doku on the bench. The most notable inclusion was Josko Gvardiol, who made his first start since early January after recovering from a broken leg. Guardiola's willingness to rotate so heavily was a gamble, but the performance justified his decision, even if early signs were uneven. Crystal Palace, too, entered the match with a reshuffled lineup, as Oliver Glasner replaced Ismaïla Sarr, Adam Wharton, and Daichi Kamada with Yéremy Pino, Jefferson Lerma, and Will Hughes. With a Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on the horizon, the Austrian had one eye on squad management, but the changes did little to inspire a competitive display.

The visitors actually threatened first. Jean-Philippe Mateta had the ball in the net inside the opening ten minutes, only for the goal to be correctly ruled out for offside against Brennan Johnson in the build-up. Johnson continued to probe down the left, teeing up Pino for a shot that drew a corner, from which Chris Richards headed over. City, meanwhile, struggled to find their rhythm. The ball was passed sideways or backwards without incision, an echo of recent disjointed displays at Burnley and Everton. Then Foden intervened with a moment of pure class that illuminated the Etihad.

Receiving a pass from Matheus Nunes with his back to goal, Foden glanced up and, in a single motion, backheeled the ball into the path of the on-rushing Semenyo. The finish was emphatic; a first-time strike beyond Dean Henderson that handed City a lead they barely deserved. Guardiola celebrated with unbridled joy, his faith in his changed side instantly rewarded. Moments later, though, he was berating his defenders after Tyrick Mitchell was allowed too much space and forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a smart save. But any anxiety evaporated when Marmoush doubled the advantage before the break. Rayan Aït-Nouri, deployed in an advanced left-sided role, lofted a cross from the right, Foden flicked it on with a deft touch, and Marmoush smashed the ball home with venom. At 2-0, the contest was effectively over.

City emerged for the second half in a downpour that made the surface slick, conditions that suited their more fluid passing. Gvardiol galloped forward at one point but wasted a chance to release Marmoush with a simple pass; Foden later overhit a lofted through-ball meant for the Egyptian. Yet such moments were outliers in a controlled second-half performance. Guardiola replaced Gvardiol with Nathan Aké and introduced Doku for Nunes, and the Belgian winger immediately added vibrancy. Marmoush sent a shot wide after a move involving Doku, while Glasner responded with a triple change: Wharton, Jørgen Strand Larsen, and Sarr entered the fray. Sarr was promptly played through but could only dribble a tame effort into Donnarumma's gloves.

The closing stages saw further substitutions as Cherki, Mateo Kovacic, and John Stones were given minutes for City. Palace brought on Kamada, who was booked for diving in the City area. The only remaining goal came from Savinho, who sealed the win in the 84th minute, capping a comfortable evening for the champions. The result moved City onto 80 points, with Arsenal on 82 ahead of their home fixture against Burnley on Monday. Burnley are already relegated, making the prospect of an Arsenal slip-up remote. City, meanwhile, face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday before the league resumes, meaning their focus will be split and their title hopes may rest on favours from Burnley or Palace—who host Arsenal on the final day.

For Foden, the night represented a definitive return to form after a protracted spell of under-performance. His vision and execution were central to City's dominance, and his ability to unlock defences will be crucial in the run-in. Guardiola will be heartened not only by the result but by the manner in which his heavily rotated squad rose to the challenge. The title race remains alive, if only just, and this win ensures the pressure on Arsenal is maintained.
