Barcelona agree £69.3m fee with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon; winger flies for medical today, set to become second-most expensive sale in club history.

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign England international winger Anthony Gordon in a deal worth £69.3 million (€80 million), including add-ons. The 25-year-old is set to fly to Barcelona on Thursday to undergo a medical and finalize personal terms, bringing an end to his successful spell on Tyneside.

The transfer fee makes Gordon the second-most expensive sale in Newcastle’s history, behind only the £125 million the club received from Barcelona’s arch-rivals for Alexander Isak last summer. It represents a significant profit on the £45 million Newcastle paid Everton in January 2023, though his departure leaves a void in the Magpies’ attack.

Gordon departs St James’ Park as Newcastle’s top scorer this season, netting 17 goals across all competitions. His numbers were particularly eye-catching on the European stage, where he struck 10 times in the Champions League – a tally only bettered by Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane. That haul propelled Newcastle to the latter stages and put Gordon firmly in the shop window for continental giants.

Despite his European heroics, his Premier League output was more modest, with six goals. Still, his overall contribution and electric pace made him a constant threat. Gordon’s versatility was a key asset: while primarily deployed on the left wing in a 4-3-3, he also operated centrally to devastating effect at times, showcasing the kind of flexibility that Barcelona covet.

In the final weeks of the season, Gordon was an unused substitute for Newcastle’s last four matches, a decision manager Eddie Howe later confirmed was to protect the player ahead of an expected summer transfer. Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson had earlier admitted the club might need to sell before they could spend big in the upcoming window, and Gordon’s sale provides a substantial cash injection.

Barcelona moved quickly to secure Gordon, thwarting competition from Bayern Munich. Sky Germany reported that the Bundesliga champions were not planning a rival bid, clearing the path for the Catalan club. With Robert Lewandowski set to leave, Barcelona see Gordon as a versatile attacker who can fill the central role or provide cover on the flanks, complementing the likes of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

Sky Sports News’ Keith Downie highlighted that Gordon’s Champions League performances were the decisive factor: “Only Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane scored more goals than Gordon’s 10. It’s a brilliant return.” Downie also pointed out that Gordon’s ability to play multiple positions – often moving inside to score different types of goals – makes him an ideal addition to Barcelona’s fluid attacking system.

For Newcastle, losing another star man after Isak is a blow, but the near-£70 million fee will ease the pain and provide funds for reinforcements. The club are expected to target a proven forward and a winger as they aim to maintain their top-four challenge next season. There is a sense among supporters that a move to a European powerhouse like Barcelona is easier to accept than a transfer to a direct Premier League rival, such as Arsenal, who had previously shown interest.

Gordon’s impending move to the Camp Nou represents a significant step in his career. Since joining Newcastle from Everton, he has matured into a regular England international and a player capable of shining on the biggest stage. The switch to La Liga will test his adaptability, but his pace, work rate, and eye for goal suggest he can thrive in Xavi’s setup.

As Gordon travels for his medical, Barcelona fans can look forward to seeing a dynamic forward who offers a different dimension to their attack. Meanwhile, Newcastle will begin the process of reinvesting the windfall to strengthen their squad for the demands of domestic and European competition.

The deal, expected to be formally announced later this week, underscores Barcelona’s intent to refresh their squad and Newcastle’s reality of balancing books while remaining competitive. It is a transfer that could reshape the attacking fortunes of both clubs.
