Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship: 3 Deaths Confirmed by WHOThe World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed a hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, resulting in five confirmed cases and three fatalities. The outbreak occurred following the vessel's departure from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1st, bound for Antarctica.

Confirmed Cases and FatalitiesAccording to the WHO, five passengers tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus. The three deceased individuals include a 70-year-old Dutch man who died on April 11, his 69-year-old Dutch wife who died on April 26, and a German woman who died on May 2.

Outbreak DetailsThe MV Hondius departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1st for an Antarctic voyage. The hantavirus cases were subsequently identified among passengers. The Andes strain of hantavirus is known to be transmitted through contact with infected rodent excreta and can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory disease.

Health ResponseHealth authorities are monitoring the situation. The WHO's confirmation of the cases underscores the importance of health surveillance on cruise ships, particularly those operating in remote regions like Antarctica. Passengers and crew who were aboard the MV Hondius during the relevant period are advised to be aware of symptoms and seek medical attention if necessary.
