In a significant operation on Thursday morning, authorities in Caucaia, part of the Fortaleza metropolitan area, intercepted a truck carrying a massive quantity of high-potency cannabis. The joint action by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) and the Military Police's State Urban and Road Traffic Battalion (BPRE) resulted in the seizure of 67.5 kilograms of skunk, a potent variant of marijuana known for its high THC concentration and elevated market value.
The operation unfolded on the CE-085 highway at kilometer 1 in the Itambé neighborhood. Police had received intelligence indicating that a truck originating from the state of Rondônia was transporting narcotics. Upon locating the vehicle, officers initiated a traffic stop. The driver and passenger immediately raised suspicion by providing inconsistent answers regarding their cargo, its origin, and their destination, while also displaying clear signs of nervousness.
Seeking further verification, the Military Police requested support from the PRF's K-9 Unit. The specialized canine team proved instrumental in the discovery. A drug-sniffing dog helped officers locate 65 tablets of skunk meticulously concealed within two spare tires and inside an air cylinder installed beneath the truck's cargo bed.
The estimated street value of the confiscated drugs exceeds one million Brazilian reais. Investigators believe the shipment was destined for the city of Fortaleza. Following the discovery, both the illicit substance and the two suspects, aged 40 and 49, were transported to the Civil Police precinct in Caucaia.
At the station, the pair was formally charged with interstate drug trafficking. Their identities were not disclosed by the authorities. This seizure highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the movement of narcotics through the state's roadways, particularly the trafficking of more potent and valuable drug variants like skunk, which presents a heightened public health concern.
