Former KHL goalie Ivan Nalimov breaks down the contrasting styles of Lokomotiv's Daniil Isayev and Ak Bars' Timur Bilyalov ahead of their Gagarin Cup Final

As the Gagarin Cup Final approaches, former KHL goaltender Ivan Nalimov has offered his expert analysis of the two netminders set to battle for the championship: Lokomotiv Yaroslavl's Daniil Isayev and Ak Bars Kazan's Timur Bilyalov. The highly anticipated series is scheduled to begin on May 11 in Yaroslavl.

Nalimov, drawing on his own professional experience, noted that both goalies are no strangers to the pressure of a final series. Despite Isayev being younger than his counterpart, both possess a level of experience that should serve them well on this stage. The analyst pointed out that Isayev's path through the previous round was not without its bumps, as he allowed some goals that could be considered avoidable.

However, Nalimov was quick to highlight the mental fortitude Isayev displayed. Those lapses did not derail the young goaltender; he maintained his composure and continued to perform his duties effectively. Nalimov suggested that a less mentally resilient player might have crumbled under similar circumstances, but Isayev showed his psychological strength is a major asset.

Technically, Isayev is described as very well-equipped. He is characterized as a quick goaltender with excellent reflexes who plays a structured, system-based game. He enters each match with a clear plan and executes it diligently, relying on his technical proficiency and athleticism.

In contrast, Nalimov paints a picture of Timur Bilyalov as a different kind of goaltender, calling him a "gamer." Bilyalov's style is less about rigid structure and more about reading the play and reacting to the opponent's actions. His greatest strength, according to Nalimov, is his superb positioning, which was on full display during Ak Bars' semifinal series against Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

When comparing the two goaltenders' performances in their respective semifinal series, Nalimov gave the edge to Bilyalov. He stated that the Ak Bars netminder looked "incredible" during that round and handled the challenges presented by Magnitogorsk more effectively than Isayev handled his opponents.

This sets the stage for a fascinating tactical duel in the final. Lokomotiv will rely on the athletic, technically sound, and mentally tough Isayev to follow his game plan. Meanwhile, Ak Bars will look to the experienced, instinctive, and positionally perfect Bilyalov to read the game and make key saves. The series promises to be a showcase of two elite but philosophically different approaches to goaltending.
