Russian MP and Olympic legend Irina Rodnina says Russia will eventually achieve lifting of IOC sanctions, following the removal of restrictions on Belarusian

Russian State Duma deputy and three-time Olympic champion Irina Rodnina has expressed confidence that Russia will eventually succeed in having its sanctions lifted by the International Olympic Committee. Her comments came in response to the recent decision to remove restrictions on Belarusian athletes.

Speaking to RIA Novosti Sport, Rodnina described the IOC's decision as "very offensive," noting that Belarusian athletes were caught in the crossfire. "They were hit first, so our time will come," she stated, suggesting Russia could follow a similar path.

The International Olympic Committee recently announced the lifting of recommendations that had imposed restrictions on Belarusian competitors. However, the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee's membership and sanctions against Russian athletes remain firmly in place.

The suspension of Russia's IOC membership was originally enacted in October 2023 and has not been reversed. This ongoing ban prevents Russian athletes from competing under their national flag at major international events.

Rodnina's remarks highlight the ongoing divide in international sports governance regarding Russian and Belarusian participation. While Belarus has seen some restrictions eased, Russia continues to face comprehensive sanctions from the Olympic body.

The situation underscores the complex geopolitical landscape affecting international sports, with different nations facing varying levels of restrictions based on their political circumstances.
