Unicamp Researchers Name 8 New Moth Species After OrixásScientists at the Institute of Biology (IB) of the University of Campinas (Unicamp) have made a remarkable discovery, identifying eight new species of moths. In a unique tribute to Brazilian cultural and religious heritage, the researchers named these newly found insects after Orixás, deities from Afro-Brazilian religions.

The newly described species include Eois iemanja, named after Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea; Eois oxumare, honoring Oxumaré, the orixá of the rainbow and movement; and Eois logunede, named for Logunedé, the orixá of wealth and hunting. The full list of eight species carries names that reflect the rich tapestry of Yoruba mythology as practiced in Brazil.

The findings were officially published in the prestigious scientific journal Scientific Reports, marking a significant contribution to the field of entomology. This research not only expands our understanding of biodiversity but also creates a lasting link between scientific discovery and cultural tradition.
