Brazil's health agency Anvisa has suspended Ypê's manufacturing and ordered a recall of specific cleaning products after detecting bacterial contamination risks. The company disputes the decision, citing independent safety reports.

In a major regulatory move, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has ordered the immediate suspension of manufacturing at a Ypê production facility and mandated a nationwide recall of certain product lines. The action targets all batches of detergents, liquid soaps, and disinfectants whose lot numbers end in the digit '1,' which were produced at the company's plant in Amparo, São Paulo.

The agency's decision follows an inspection that uncovered significant failures in critical stages of the production process. According to Anvisa, these shortcomings in quality assurance and control systems violate Good Manufacturing Practices for sanitizers and present a public health risk due to the potential for microbiological contamination. This escalation comes months after the manufacturer, Química Amparo, first identified the presence of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa in specific batches of its liquid laundry detergent, prompting a voluntary precautionary recall in November 2025.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic microorganism commonly found in the environment. While it rarely causes infection in healthy individuals, it can pose a serious threat to people with compromised immune systems. Medical literature indicates that infections can range from minor external issues to life-threatening conditions, particularly in vulnerable populations such as cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, and individuals with advanced HIV.

Ypê has responded with strong opposition, calling the regulatory action 'arbitrary and disproportionate.' The company asserts it possesses scientific evidence, including independent test reports, that confirms the safety of its products. Ypê maintains that the items do not represent a risk to consumers and is engaged in continuous dialogue with Anvisa, expressing confidence that it can reverse the decision by presenting additional technical information.

In its official communication, the company outlined several key points regarding the risk profile. It stated that normal use of the product, diluted in washing machine water, drastically reduces any bacterial load. Furthermore, Ypê claims there is no record in medical literature of infection caused by clothes washed with domestic detergents, even in contamination scenarios. The company advises that the primary precaution is to avoid direct and prolonged contact of the concentrated product with the skin, especially for immunocompromised individuals with open wounds.

The recall affects a wide range of Ypê-branded items across several categories. These include various formulations of dishwashing liquid (Lava-louças), liquid laundry detergent (Lava-roupas Líquido Tixan), and disinfectants (Desinfetante). Consumers are urged to check the lot number on the product label. If it ends in '1,' they should immediately stop using the product and contact the company's customer service to arrange a replacement.

For the general population, the risk is considered low. However, the alert is particularly critical for immunocompromised individuals, who are advised to avoid any contact with the concentrated product. Both the company and Anvisa recommend washing hands after handling the items and ensuring that laundered clothes are thoroughly rinsed and dried before use.
