Calgary’s Cavalry FC, founded in 2018, galloped onto the Canadian soccer scene as one of the eight original members of the Canadian Premier League (CPL). The club was born from a community-driven vision to bring professional top-flight soccer to Alberta’s largest city, with the backing of local ownership led by Spruce Meadows Sports & Entertainment. The iconic Spruce Meadows equestrian and sports complex in the southern Calgary community of Heritage Pointe became both the club’s spiritual home and its fortress—the 6,000-seat ATCO Field, an intimate venue where fans are just metres from the pitch, creating an atmosphere that rivals any in North America. Cavalry FC quickly established itself as a CPL powerhouse. The club claimed the CPL regular-season title (the “Cavalry Shield”) in 2019, topping the league table in its inaugural campaign. The same year, they reached the CPL Finals, losing to Forge FC in a two-legged final. The team has consistently qualified for the postseason—finishing first or second in the spring and fall standings multiple times—and won the 2024 CPL Shield for the best regular-season record (their second). In the Canadian Championship, Cavalry has become a thorn in the side of MLS clubs, famously defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2019 and reaching the semi-finals in 2022 and 2023, defeating Pacific FC and York United along the way. While they have not yet won a CPL championship, their consistent domestic dominance and deep cup runs (including a famous 2-1 win over the Whitecaps in 2023) have cemented their reputation. European competitions are not available to CPL clubs, but Cavalry has participated in CONCACAF League (2019) and the CONCACAF Champions Cup (2024), losing to Honduran side Club Deportivo Olimpia and Costa Rica’s Herediano respectively—valuable continental experience. Notable players from Cavalry’s short history include club captain and Canadian international Nikolas Ledgerwood (2019‑2021), a stalwart central midfielder and leader. Goal-scoring legend Sergio Camacho (2019‑2023) became the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with over 30 goals across all competitions, earning CPL Player of the Year in 2022. Veteran striker Joe Mason and tricky winger Ali Musse have also been key. The playing style under head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. (the only manager the club has known) emphasizes relentless high pressing, quick transitions, and a physical, organized defensive shape—often described as “cavalry charge” football. This identity mirrors the blue-collar spirit of Calgary and the club’s equestrian roots. Fan culture is vibrant, with the supporters’ group “The 8th Man” (a nod to the club’s starting eleven) providing non-stop chanting, tifos, and smoke. The “Cavalry Charge” at the start of matches—where fans gallop into the stadium—is a unique tradition. Rivalries are intense: the “Al-Classico” against FC Edmonton (now defunct) was a derby, but the current main rivalry is with Forge FC, a “Cavs vs. Forge” battle that has decided multiple titles and carries cross-provincial pride (Alberta vs. Ontario). Cavalry FC currently sits as a top contender in the CPL, aiming for their first league championship. A fascinating fact: the club’s crest features a horse and rider, honoring the historic North-West Mounted Police and the equestrian heritage of Spruce Meadows. Cavalry FC continues to grow, representing the passion of Canadian soccer in the heart of the Rockies.
