Carolina Sthela Ferreira dos Anjos was captured in Teresina, Piauí, after a joint police operation. She is accused of torturing and assaulting a 19-year-old pregnant employee in Maranhão.

In a significant development in a shocking case of alleged domestic violence, Brazilian authorities have apprehended a businesswoman accused of a brutal attack on her pregnant employee. Carolina Sthela Ferreira dos Anjos was arrested in Teresina, the capital of Piauí state, as she was reportedly attempting to flee. The arrest was the result of a coordinated effort between the Civil Police forces of Maranhão and Piauí, following an intensive intelligence operation.

The suspect was located at a gas station in the São Cristóvão neighborhood. Authorities state she was trying to evade capture after a preventive arrest warrant was issued by the Maranhão judiciary. Her defense attorney, however, contests the fleeing narrative, claiming Carolina traveled to Piauí to leave her six-year-old son with trusted relatives, as she has no family in Maranhão to care for the child.

The case centers on harrowing allegations from a 19-year-old domestic worker who is five months pregnant. The victim reported that her employer accused her of stealing jewelry, which was later found in a laundry basket. Despite the item being recovered, the alleged assaults continued. The young woman described being subjected to hair-pulling, punches, and being thrown to the floor, all while she desperately tried to protect her unborn child.

The allegations grew more severe with claims of death threats intended to silence the victim. Audio recordings, reportedly sent by the accused herself and obtained by local media, have been attached to the police inquiry. In one chilling message, Carolina allegedly stated the victim "wasn't supposed to have come out alive," and described a prolonged attack involving another unidentified man who arrived armed.

The investigation has also implicated law enforcement. A military police officer, Michael Bruno Lopes Santos, mentioned in the accusations, has been arrested in São Luís and is under internal affairs investigation. Furthermore, four other military police officers who initially responded to the incident have been removed from their duties after audio recordings suggested the accused avoided being taken to a police station due to knowing an officer.

The victim's testimony paints a picture of exploitative working conditions. She claimed to have been paid R$750 for over two weeks of work, accumulating nearly 10-hour days from Monday to Saturday with only a 30-minute break. Her duties allegedly included cleaning, cooking, laundry, and childcare. The Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) has classified the crime as aggravated torture, alongside bodily injury, threats, and defamation.

Carolina Sthela Ferreira dos Anjos, through a formal statement, has declared her cooperation with the investigation and stated she will present her defense in due course. She also expressed her repudiation of any form of violence, especially against women and vulnerable individuals, and called for no premature judgment while the case is being examined. The police investigation remains ongoing to fully establish the facts and identify all involved parties.
