Ex-SKA coach Sergei Cherkas says Lokomotiv's superior conditioning was key to their 4-3 series win over Avangard in the 2026 Gagarin Cup semifinal.

Former SKA head coach Sergei Cherkas has offered his analysis of the dramatic Gagarin Cup semifinal series between Lokomotiv and Avangard, which concluded with a 4-3 victory for the Yaroslavl side. According to Cherkas, the outcome was largely determined by one team's superior physical preparation.

Cherkas described the seven-game series as a spectacular event for hockey fans, even if the intense competition created significant stress for the players and coaching staffs involved. He noted that such closely contested matchups are a gift for the sport's audience.

The core of his critique, however, was directed at Avangard's bench boss, Guy Boucher. Cherkas pinpointed a critical moment in Game 6 when Avangard held a 2-1 lead. He argued that Boucher should have called a timeout to settle his team and deploy players capable of protecting the advantage.

Instead, Avangard conceded a quick goal, followed by an ill-advised penalty that led to a power-play goal, tying the game at 2-2. This sequence of events, in Cherkas's view, was a turning point that shifted the momentum of the entire series.

"Lokomotiv was better prepared for the series functionally," Cherkas stated, emphasizing the physical and conditioning aspect. He concluded bluntly that "Avangard lost it themselves," suggesting the defeat was self-inflicted rather than solely due to Lokomotiv's superiority.

This victory propels Lokomotiv into the Gagarin Cup Final, where they will face Ak Bars Kazan. The championship series is scheduled to begin on May 11, promising another high-stakes clash between two of the KHL's top clubs.
