A property owner in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, is facing a significant financial penalty after being caught in an illegal deforestation operation. The 35-year-old man was issued a fine exceeding R$11,000 by the Environmental Military Police following an inspection on his farm located in the Bairro do Aeroporto.

The incident occurred on a Thursday when police conducted a vistoria, or official inspection, of the rural property. During their assessment, they discovered the unauthorized felling of 36 native trees. The species identified included ipê, leiteiro, and amendoim-bravo, all of which are protected native flora.

The situation was complicated by the fact that the owner did possess an authorization for tree removal. This permit had been issued through the official Via Rápida Ambiental (VRA) system. However, the police investigation revealed a critical discrepancy: the actual work being performed on the ground was in direct violation of the terms and conditions outlined in that authorization.

The environmental violation was further compounded by the location of the felled trees. While the majority were situated in a common area of the property, the police report confirmed that two of the 36 trees were cut down within a designated Área de Preservação Permanente (APP). These Permanent Preservation Areas are legally protected zones under Brazilian environmental law, meant to safeguard critical ecosystems and water resources.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges of environmental enforcement and the importance of strict compliance with forestry permits. The fine serves as a reminder that possessing an authorization does not grant carte blanche for any activity; the work must adhere precisely to the approved plan. The cutting of trees within an APP represents a particularly serious infraction, carrying heavier legal consequences.

This enforcement action by the Polícia Militar Ambiental underscores their role in monitoring rural properties and ensuring that development and land management activities do not come at the expense of legally protected native vegetation. The substantial fine reflects the severity of the violations discovered during the inspection.
