The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has moved to calm concerns following reports of a hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius.
In a statement to AFP, Dr. Ghebreyesus explicitly stated that he does not believe the current situation is comparable to the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. He sought to minimize the perceived danger, insisting that the risk posed to the rest of the world by this outbreak is low.
Furthermore, the WHO chief indicated that the situation does not currently warrant the convening of the organization's emergency committee. This suggests that, in the assessment of the WHO leadership, the outbreak is being contained and does not meet the threshold for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
