FK Vojvodina, officially Fudbalski klub Vojvodina, is a historic Serbian football club based in Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina province. Founded on March 18, 1914, the club emerged from a merger of two local sides—ŠK Trgovački and ŠK Radnički—amid the final years of Austro-Hungarian rule. The name “Vojvodina” was chosen to reflect the region’s unique identity. After World War II, the club became a mainstay of Yugoslav and later Serbian top-tier football. The team plays at the Karađorđe Stadium, opened in 1924 and renovated multiple times, with a current capacity of around 14,000. The stadium is located in the Detelinara neighborhood of Novi Sad, a vibrant city known for its Petrovaradin Fortress and EXIT Festival. Vojvodina has won the Yugoslav First League twice (1965–66 and 1988–89) and the Yugoslav Cup once (1914, before official national competitions). In the Serbian era, they claimed the Serbian Cup in 2014 and 2020, and the Serbian SuperLiga in 2022–23 was their first top-flight title as an independent nation. They have participated in European competitions regularly, reaching the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1967–68 and the Europa League group stage in 2023–24. Legendary players include Vujadin Boškov (later a renowned coach), Milan Stojanović, Slobodan Krčmarević, and more recently Mijat Gaćinović and Sergej Milinković-Savić, who began his senior career at Vojvodina. The club’s youth academy is famous for producing talent; players like Dušan Tadić, Stefan Mitrović, and Nikola Žigić also passed through. Vojvodina’s playing style traditionally emphasizes technical skill, quick passing, and attacking football, often blending local talent with experienced professionals. The team is known as “Lale” (Tulips) because of their red-and-white kits. Fan culture is led by the “Firma” group, a passionate ultras collective founded in 1989, who create a lively atmosphere at Karađorđe. The club’s biggest rivalry is with Red Star Belgrade and Partizan, but a fierce regional derby exists with Novi Pazar and other Vojvodina clubs. Vojvodina is the most supported club in the autonomous province. Current status: As of the 2024–25 season, Vojvodina competes in the Serbian SuperLiga, consistently finishing in the top half and qualifying for European competitions. Their recent success under coach Miloš Veselinović has restored pride. Interesting facts: Vojvodina holds the record for most seasons in the Yugoslav/Serbian top flight without ever being relegated. Their 1965–66 title was won by a single point over Dinamo Zagreb. The club’s crest features a stylized “V” with a tulip, symbolizing the region’s flower. In 2020, they defeated Partizan 4–2 in an epic cup final comeback. Vojvodina remains a symbol of provincial pride and resilience, bridging tradition and modern ambition.
