Radnički Niš
Founded in 1923, FK Radnički Niš is one of the most historic and beloved football clubs in Serbia, representing the vibrant city of Niš in the country's southern heartland. The club was established by workers and railway employees, hence the name "Radnički" (meaning "workers'"). From its earliest days, the team became a symbol of the working-class spirit and resilience of the Niš region, quickly rising to become a mainstay of Yugoslav and later Serbian football. Home matches are played at the Čair Stadium, a compact yet passionate venue located in the heart of Niš. Built in 1963 and renovated multiple times, the stadium has a capacity of around 18,000 and is renowned for its intense atmosphere, especially when rivals visit. The city of Niš, one of the oldest in the Balkans and famous for its Roman heritage and the Niš Fortress, provides a rich backdrop. Radnički’s deep blue and white colors are a source of local pride, and the club is often affectionately called "Real iz Nišave" (the Real of the Nišava River) for its flair and never-say-die attitude. Radnički Niš has enjoyed several notable achievements. Their golden era came in the late 1970s and early 1980s when they consistently challenged the Yugoslav giants. They were runners-up in the Yugoslav First League in 1979/80, their best-ever league finish. Domestically, they reached the Yugoslav Cup final in 1975 and 1976, narrowly losing both times. In European competitions, they made memorable runs: reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1981/82, eliminating Italian side Napoli (with Diego Maradona in the squad) in a legendary tie, and also competing in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. More recently, they have been a top Serbian SuperLiga side, finishing as runners-up in 2016/17 and 2018/19, and winning the Serbian Cup in 2021/22, their first major trophy in decades. Legendary players include **Dragan "Piksi" Stojković** – one of Serbia's greatest ever footballers, who began his career at Radnički before starring for Red Star, Marseille, and the national team. His vision, technique, and free-kicks made him a global icon, and he later returned as club president. Other luminaries include **Dušan Savić**, a prolific striker; **Milan Đorđević**, a midfield general; and modern heroes like **Aleksandar Mitrović** (who spent formative years at the club) and **Milan Radin**. The club’s playing style has traditionally been attacking, technical, and daring, reflecting the passionate, high-tempo football of the Niš region. Fan culture is intense and deeply rooted. The ultras group **"Meraklije"** (meaning enthusiasts or connoisseurs) are known for their tifo displays, constant chants, and unwavering support. Radnički shares a fierce rivalry with **FK Napredak Kruševac** (the Niš-Kruševac derby) and a historic animosity with **FK Vojvodina**. However, the most passionate fixture is the **"Derby of the South"** against **FK Radnik Surdulica** or the more intense clashes with **Red Star** and **Partizan**, whom Radnički often upsets. Currently, Radnički Niš competes in the Serbian SuperLiga, consistently aiming for European qualification. The club is in a rebuilding phase, blending experienced veterans with homegrown youth, while maintaining a strong identity. Interesting facts: the club’s crest features a gear wheel honoring its working-class roots; they were the first Serbian club to eliminate a team coached by Maradona; and the famous "Nišava River" celebration – players often run to the riverbank after derby wins. Radnički Niš remains a proud, resilient institution, embodying the soul of southern Serbia.
