The Croatian First Football League, commonly known as the HNL (Hrvatska Nogometna Liga), is the premier professional football competition in Croatia. Established in 1992 following the country's independence, the league succeeded the Yugoslav First League's Croatian regional system. It is organized by the Croatian Football Federation and has grown into a competitive league that serves as a crucial talent pipeline for the national team. The HNL typically features ten clubs competing in a season that runs from July to May. The competition format has evolved, but currently involves a 36-round regular season where each team plays the others four times (home and away twice). The league champion earns a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, while other top finishers qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League. At the bottom of the table, the last-placed team is automatically relegated to the Second Football League (Druga HNL), while the ninth-placed team enters a relegation playoff. Dinamo Zagreb is the league's most dominant force, having won the vast majority of the titles since 1992. Their fierce rivals, Hajduk Split from the coastal city of Split, are the other historical giant and perennial challenger. Other notable clubs include NK Osijek, HNK Rijeka, and NK Lokomotiva Zagreb, which often compete for European places. The league has been a springboard for world-class talent; players like Luka Modrić, Ivan Rakitić, and Mateo Kovačić began their careers in the HNL before moving to top European leagues. Internationally renowned figures such as Robert Prosinečki and Davor Šuker also graced the league in its early years. The current landscape is characterized by Dinamo Zagreb's sustained supremacy, though clubs like Hajduk Split and Osijek have mounted stronger challenges in recent seasons, increasing competitiveness. An interesting fact is that the HNL holds the record for the lowest average attendance among Europe's top-tier leagues, yet it consistently produces players who excel on the international stage, significantly contributing to Croatia's remarkable success in FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships. The league's structure and focus on youth development make it a vital component of Croatian football culture.
