Brazil's health agency Anvisa has mandated a recall of numerous Ypê cleaning products due to microbiological contamination risks. The company calls the move 'arbitrary' and plans to appeal.

In a major consumer safety alert, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has ordered the immediate recall of dozens of cleaning products from the brand Ypê. The agency's decision, published in Resolution 1.834/2026, stems from an inspection that uncovered significant failures in critical stages of the production process at the company's factory.

The recall specifically targets laundry detergents, dish soaps, and disinfectants belonging to production batches where the lot number ends with the digit '1'. Consumers are urged to check the packaging, typically found under the label, on the base, or near the cap, for the lot number, which is usually preceded by 'Lote:' or 'L:'.

Anvisa's investigation revealed shortcomings in the quality assurance, production, and control systems, compromising Good Manufacturing Practices and indicating a potential for contamination by harmful microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Such contamination can produce toxins leading to illnesses or irritations.

The agency's directive has prompted strong reaction from Ypê. In an official statement, the company expressed 'indignation with the decision,' labeling it 'arbitrary and disproportionate.' Ypê announced its intention to appeal the ruling, citing independent laboratory reports that it claims prove its products are 'totally safe and adequate for consumption.'

The news caught many consumers off guard. Roberta Mologni, a retiree from Campinas who had just purchased five bottles of Ypê detergent the day before the announcement, expressed relief at not having used them yet. 'I was worried because, as an allergic person, how would I handle using this? How will I proceed and how will they proceed regarding this?' she questioned.

Anvisa's guidance to the public is clear: consumers who have the specified products at home should stop using them immediately. The recommended course of action is to contact Ypê's Consumer Service (SAC) for information on the return and recall procedure.

The list of affected items is extensive, including various lines of Ypê dish soap, Tixan Ypê laundry detergent in multiple formulations, and several disinfectant products under the Ypê and Atol brands. The full list has been published by the agency and is circulating widely in media reports.

This development represents a significant challenge for the cleaning products giant, forcing a direct confrontation with the national health regulator over product safety standards and the integrity of its manufacturing oversight.
