Conte: 'Not a Coincidence' Napoli Drop Points in CL Chase

Napoli missed Champions League clinch with 3-2 home loss to Bologna. Conte critiques slow starts, calls them 'not a coincidence,' and praises Hojlund & Alisson.

Napoli's hopes of mathematically securing Champions League qualification were dashed on Monday as they suffered a dramatic 3-2 home defeat to Bologna at the Stadio Maradona. The result leaves Antonio Conte's side still three points clear of fifth place with two games remaining, but the manner of the loss has raised serious questions about the team's consistency and mental fortitude.

The match began disastrously for the hosts, who found themselves 2-0 down inside the first half-hour thanks to goals from Federico Bernardeschi and Riccardo Orsolini. Napoli showed character to fight back, with Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Alisson pulling the scores level. However, just when a point seemed secured, Bologna's Rowe struck in stoppage time to snatch all three points and leave the home crowd stunned.

Speaking after the match, Conte did not hide his frustration. "The approach? When you press, you have to go hard. If you go half and half, you just run and waste energy. We should have been more aggressive. Finding ourselves 2-0 down is not the first time, so it's not a coincidence," he said to DAZN.

The experienced coach added, "I'm not disappointed with the performance; the lads showed energy and desire to close the deal. But sometimes the devil puts his tail in, and this time he did." The Italian idiom underscores the sense of cruel fate that Napoli have often encountered this season.

Conte also addressed individual performances, notably center-forward Rasmus Hojlund. "Hojlund is effectively our only striker and he's playing every game. He should have had more opportunities to rest. He's only 23 and has huge room for improvement, but he works hard for the team," the former Juventus boss said.

On the other hand, Conte praised the progress of young winger Alisson. "He is growing match by match. He never started regularly at Sporting Lisbon, so he can improve even more. He's doing very well," Conte noted.

The defeat means Napoli remain on 73 points, three ahead of fifth-placed Atalanta, with fixtures against Lecce and Juventus to come. A single win from those two matches would still guarantee a top-four finish, but the failure to get over the line at home has injected unnecessary tension into the finale.

From a tactical perspective, Conte's side has developed a worrying habit of falling behind early. According to the data, Napoli have conceded the opening goal in seven of their last 12 matches, a trend that must be addressed if they are to compete at the highest level next season.

Bologna, meanwhile, climb to eighth with 52 points, keeping their slim European hopes alive. For Napoli, the focus now shifts to recovery and mental reset. The Champions League remains within reach, but the margin for error has evaporated.
