Piauí residents can now schedule their national ID card online, a move officials say will cut queues and boost the state's impressive 60% documentation rate.

In a major play for public convenience, residents of Piauí now have a powerful new tool at their disposal. The state has launched an online scheduling system for the Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), the national identity card. This digital service, available through the Gov.pi Cidadão website and app, allows citizens to book their in-person appointment in advance, a strategy designed to streamline the process and eliminate long waiting lines.

The process is straightforward. Users access the platform, fill in their personal details, and submit the required documents digitally. The mandatory paperwork includes a birth or marriage certificate, a CPF (individual taxpayer number), and proof of residence. Officials emphasize that all documents must be legible, free of alterations, and not handwritten. The system also provides an option to attach additional documents that can be included on the ID card, such as a driver's license, voter registration card, blood type, or SUS health card.

Once the digital submission is complete, the citizen selects a preferred date and time to visit a service center. The final step is an in-person appointment where biometric data—fingerprints, a photograph, and a signature—are collected. This hybrid model aims to combine the efficiency of digital preparation with the security of physical verification.

The initiative is being championed by state officials as a significant step forward. Marcelo Mascarenha, the Superintendent of Digital Citizenship, highlighted the service's benefits. He stated that the new system is designed to make life easier for citizens when obtaining their national ID, offering greater convenience and avoiding queues. Furthermore, he noted it represents an important step in continuing to increase the number of ID issuances in Piauí, ensuring greater access and efficiency in serving the population.

The move comes as Piauí is already leading the national charge in document issuance. According to the state government, Piauí has reached the milestone of 2 million issuances of the new national ID card. This achievement places it at the top of the national ranking on a proportional basis, with approximately 60% of its population now documented with the new CIN.

This online scheduling system is the latest effort to maintain that momentum. By reducing friction and wait times, the government aims to encourage even more residents to complete the process, further solidifying the state's position as a national leader in digital citizenship and public service efficiency.
