Commentator Nobel Arustamyan suggests PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov may have intentionally kicked the ball out of play during the Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich as part of a tactical plan by coach Luis Enrique.

Football commentator Nobel Arustamyan has shared his analysis of a potentially deliberate tactical maneuver by Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvei Safonov during the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, securing PSG's place in the final.

According to Arustamyan, who posted his observations on his Telegram channel, Safonov appeared to consistently direct his goal kicks toward the left flank, with the ball frequently going out of play. This pattern caught the commentator's attention throughout the match, as it seemed to be a recurring strategy rather than a series of errors.

The theory gained traction following a report from Le Parisien, which suggested that PSG coach Luis Enrique had specifically instructed Safonov to kick the ball out of bounds in that area. The alleged purpose of this tactic was to overload the zone where Bayern winger Michael Olise operated, thereby limiting his space and effectiveness during the game.

Statistical data from Opta supports the observation of Safonov's frequent long distributions. The goalkeeper attempted 32 long passes during the match, but only six of them found their intended target. This unusually low accuracy rate aligns with the theory that many of these kicks were not meant to reach a teammate but rather to disrupt Bayern's attacking patterns.

The tactical approach appears to have yielded results if the reports are accurate. Olise, who has been a key creative force for Bayern this season, managed only one shot on target throughout the entire match. This limited impact could be attributed to the constant disruption caused by the ball repeatedly going out of play in his area of operation.

Arustamyan congratulated both Safonov and fellow Russian player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on reaching the Champions League final, noting the pride of seeing players from the Russian Premier League succeeding at the highest level of European club football with what he described as the best team in Europe.

While some Russian-speaking Telegram channels have expressed skepticism about whether Safonov's actions were truly intentional, Arustamyan emphasized that regardless of interpretation, the match demonstrated Luis Enrique's meticulous approach to game analysis. The coach is known for paying attention to the smallest details, and even a simple goal kick can be transformed into a strategic tool to unsettle opponents.
