Rennes will be without first-choice keeper Brice Samba for their decisive final Ligue 1 match at Marseille after a controversial yellow card suspension was upheld.

Rennes faces a significant challenge for their final Ligue 1 fixture of the season, a trip to Marseille on May 17 that carries major European implications. The club will have to navigate this high-stakes encounter without their starting goalkeeper, Brice Samba, after a disciplinary ruling confirmed his suspension.

The suspension stems from a yellow card Samba received during a recent 4-2 defeat away to Lyon. The booking was his fifth of the campaign, triggering an automatic one-match ban. The incident occurred in the penalty area when Lyon's Afonso Moreira was fouled. Referee M. Turpin judged that Samba contributed to the attacker's fall, though there was debate over whether the primary contact came from Rennes defender Mousa Al-Tamari.

Rennes lodged an official appeal with the disciplinary commission, seeking to have the yellow card rescinded. However, the commission ultimately upheld the referee's decision, leaving Samba unavailable for the critical match at the Vélodrome. The club's hopes were reportedly low from the outset, as the referee had communicated to coach Franck Haise his belief that there were two separate contacts during the play.

Samba himself expressed frustration with the decision, suggesting the referee took an easier option by booking the goalkeeper. He maintained he did not make meaningful contact with the Lyon forward and felt the situation was unclear, especially after initial indications pointed to a foul by Al-Tamari.

With Samba sidelined, the responsibility falls to 20-year-old backup Mathys Silistrie. The young keeper, who is under contract until 2029, is set to make his third senior start for the club. His professional debut came in a Coupe de France match in December, and he previously started a league game at Lens in February under former coach Habib Beye.

That previous start against Lens was a mixed experience for Silistrie. While he was not directly at fault for the opening goal, he was beaten by a shot from Allan Saint-Maximin that sealed the 3-1 loss, a strike described as tricky but within his reach. Beye had promoted Silistrie to the number two role at the start of the season following the departure of veteran Steve Mandanda.

The upcoming match against Marseille is poised to be decisive for both teams' European ambitions. For Rennes, fielding a young and relatively inexperienced goalkeeper in such a pressure-filled environment adds an extra layer of uncertainty to their preparations. Silistrie, a product of the same Rennes youth generation as talents like Désiré Doué and Mathys Tel, will now have the opportunity to prove himself on one of Ligue 1's biggest stages.
