Saint-Étienne need 2-goal edge over Amiens to avoid playoffs

Saint-Étienne must score two more goals than relegated Amiens on the final day and hope Le Mans drops points to avoid the Ligue 1 relegation playoffs.

Saint-Étienne's Ligue 1 survival hangs by a thread as they prepare to host already-relegated Amiens on the final matchday of the season. The Greens find themselves in a desperate situation, needing not only a victory but a specific margin to climb out of the relegation playoff zone. To bypass the dreaded barrages, they must score at least two more goals than Amiens—and keep one eye on scores elsewhere, hoping for a Le Mans slip-up at Bastia.

The club’s dramatic slide began with a 2-0 defeat at Bastia on April 18, a result that shattered their confidence. At that point, two draws from three games would have kept destiny in their own hands. Instead, they lost all three remaining fixtures on the bounce, managing just a single goal in that stretch. Advanced metrics underline the offensive crisis: their expected goals tallies in those defeats—0.48 at Bastia and 0.62 at Rodez—rank among the two worst under manager Philippe Montanier.

Amid the turmoil, Montanier has tinkered with his setup in search of a spark. Last weekend’s match saw him field two centre-forwards, Joshua Duffus and Lucas Stassin, from the start for the first time. Stassin later led the line alone in a second-half formation that oscillated between a 3-4-3 and a 4-2-3-1. The move yielded a late breakthrough when Irvin Cardona converted a set-piece in the 89th minute, but it was not enough to prevent another loss.

Speaking to the press, Montanier acknowledged the attacking shortcomings but stressed system changes are only part of the fix. “It’s an option, but we also adjust based on form,” he said. “I felt we didn’t weigh enough offensively. However, it’s not just the system—our full-backs need to contribute more, one must push forward. The whole attacking animation is off, not just the two strikers.” His words hint at a broader malaise that has left the team toothless in the most critical weeks.

The arithmetic for survival is daunting yet simple. Saint-Étienne sit in the relegation play-off spot and can only overtake Le Mans if they better their result. Any Amiens goal makes the task steeper: the hosts must not only win but outscore Amiens by two clear goals to swing the goal difference in their favour. Simultaneously, they require Le Mans to drop points at Bastia, a scenario that leaves players and fans alike frantically refreshing smartphones on Saturday night.

This clash is a stark contrast to the club’s storied past, having won ten Ligue 1 titles. The Verts have been a staple of French top-flight football, but now stare down the possibility of dropping into Ligue 2 or, at best, a nerve-shredding relegation playoff. The Geoffroy-Guichard crowd will be called upon to lift a side that has lost its bearings entirely.

Stassin, Duffus, and Cardona will likely feature again as Montanier gambles on attacking intent. Whether the tactical changes can finally translate into goals will decide if Saint-Étienne can write a last-minute escape story—or face the heartbreak of a second-division reality.
