Teresina reports over 7,000 flu syndrome cases from January to April 2026, a 42% increase from the same period last year, with 345 severe respiratory cases

The city of Teresina is experiencing a significant rise in respiratory illnesses, with health authorities reporting a sharp increase in flu-related syndromes during the first four months of 2026.

According to data from the Municipal Health Foundation's Health Surveillance Directorate, the capital of Piauí recorded 7,001 cases of flu syndromes between January and April. This figure represents a substantial 42% jump compared to the 4,931 cases documented during the same timeframe in 2025.

The concerning trend extends to more severe conditions as well. Through the first week of May 2026, Teresina had notified 345 cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG). While this marks an increase from the 328 cases recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, the rise of approximately 5.2% is less dramatic than the overall flu syndrome surge.

Health officials attribute the spike to predictable seasonal patterns. Johansen Pitta, head of the Immunopreventable Diseases Unit at the Municipal Health Foundation, explained that the increase aligns with the natural seasonal circulation of respiratory viruses.

"These data demonstrate an important increase in the circulation of respiratory viruses, accompanying the seasonal period of these diseases, which occurs mainly in the first months of the year, coinciding with the rainy season in the Northeast region," Pitta stated.

The rainy season in Brazil's Northeast typically creates conditions that facilitate the spread of respiratory pathogens. Cooler temperatures and increased indoor crowding during wet weather are common contributing factors to such seasonal outbreaks.

Local health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of vaccination and public awareness campaigns to mitigate the impact of respiratory viruses on the community.
