Hradec Králové
Founded in 1905 as SK Hradec Králové, the club emerged from the eastern Bohemian city of Hradec Králové, a historic royal town at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers. Originally playing in local regional leagues, the club slowly climbed the Czechoslovak football pyramid. Their golden era arrived in the late 1950s and early 1960s under legendary coach Jiří Zástěra. In 1960, they achieved an unprecedented double: winning both the Czechoslovak First League title and the Czechoslovak Cup. That league title remains the club’s only top-flight championship, making them one of the smallest clubs ever to win the Czechoslovak league. They also reached the 1961–62 European Cup quarterfinals, eliminating Dinamo Zagreb before falling to Tottenham Hotspur. Hradec Králové plays its home matches at the modern Všesportovní Stadion (also known as Malšovická aréna), rebuilt in 2023 with a capacity of 9,300. The stadium boasts a distinctive roof and excellent sightlines, reflecting the club’s ambition to compete at the highest level. The city itself, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its beautiful Renaissance architecture, provides a picturesque setting. Among legendary players, striker Josef Pospíchal (who later played for Sparta Prague and won the European Championship in 1976) and goalkeeper Ivo Viktor (winner of the Ballon d’Or for goalkeepers in 1976) both spent formative years at Hradec. Viktor’s later career at Dukla Prague made him a national icon. More recently, the club produced talents like Roman Hubník and Pavel Černý. Playing style historically emphasizes disciplined defense and quick counterattacks, typical of a club that often competes against bigger budgets. They are known for organized pressing and set-piece efficiency. Fan culture is passionate but modest, with a core supporter group called “Sektor 5” known for choreographed tifo displays. Their biggest rivalry is with nearby team FK Pardubice, with whom they contest the “East Bohemian Derby” – a lively but friendly local affair. After a brief stint in the second division, Hradec Králové returned to the Czech First League in 2021 and have since established themselves as a mid-table side, often flirting with the top six. Under manager David Horejš, they combine experienced veterans with young prospects. An interesting fact: the club’s crest features a stylized deer, a nod to the city’s coat of arms. In 2023, they opened their new stadium, becoming one of the most modern grounds in the Czech Republic outside Prague. Their 1960 double remains a source of immense pride, symbolizing that even a small city club can achieve greatness.
