Lega Professionistica del Golfo Persico
The Persian Gulf Pro League, known in Persian as *Lig-e Bartar-e Xalij-e Fars*, stands as the pinnacle of professional football in Iran. Established in 2001 as a rebranding and restructuring of the previous Azadegan League, it represents the top tier of the Iranian football league system. The league's inception marked a significant step towards modernization and commercialization of the sport in the country, adopting a more professional structure to enhance competitiveness and fan engagement. The competition features 16 teams in a standard round-robin format, where each club plays the others twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 30 matches per season. The team with the most points at the end of the campaign is crowned champion and earns a spot in the AFC Champions League. The bottom two teams are relegated to the Azadegan League (the second division), while the 14th-placed team enters a relegation playoff. This structure ensures a high-stakes battle at both ends of the table throughout the season. The league is dominated by two historic and immensely popular Tehran-based rivals: Persepolis FC and Esteghlal FC. Their matches, known as the "Tehran Derby," are among the most-watched and fiercely contested fixtures in Asian football, drawing massive crowds and intense national attention. Other notable clubs include Sepahan Isfahan, a consistent title contender with a strong fan base, Foolad Khuzestan, and Tractor Sazi from Tabriz, which boasts one of the most passionate followings in the country. The Persian Gulf Pro League has been a showcase for Iranian footballing talent, serving as a launchpad for stars who have gone on to international acclaim. Legends like Ali Daei, the former world record holder for international goals, and Ali Karimi, the "Asian Maradona," graced the league in its early years. More recently, players like Mehdi Taremi and Sardar Azmoun used the league as a springboard to successful careers in European football. The league also attracts notable foreign players and coaches, adding to its quality and profile. Today, the league remains highly competitive, with Persepolis and Esteghal often battling for supremacy, but clubs like Sepahan and Foolad frequently challenging for honors. An interesting fact is the league's official name sponsorship, which has changed over the years, reflecting its commercial evolution. The passionate fan culture, intense local derbies, and its role as the backbone of the Iranian national team make the Persian Gulf Pro League a vibrant and essential component of Asian football.
