Bayeux, near João Pessoa, expands flu shots to all residents starting May 8 due to heavy rains and flooding. Priority groups get door-to-door service; general

The municipality of Bayeux, located in the Greater João Pessoa metropolitan area, has taken a significant public health step by opening its influenza vaccination campaign to the entire population. The decision, effective from Friday, May 8, comes as a direct response to the severe weather conditions that have recently impacted the region.

Heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in Bayeux and across the state of Paraíba have created conditions of heightened vulnerability for residents. The local government, through its Municipal Health Secretariat, determined that expanding vaccine access beyond the initial priority groups was a necessary measure of precaution. The goal is to bolster community immunity during a period when falling temperatures and the aftermath of the floods increase health risks.

Lady Soares, the head of Health Surveillance in Bayeux, explained the rationale behind the move. "Given the heavy rains affecting not only Bayeux but all of Paraíba, the secretariat decided, as a matter of prudence, to not only intensify care for priority groups but also to open vaccination to the rest of the population, as it is the safest form of prevention," she stated.

The campaign employs a dual strategy to ensure maximum reach. For the established priority groups—which typically include the elderly, healthcare workers, and those with chronic conditions—health teams from the Basic Health Units (UBSs) are conducting door-to-door vaccination. This mobile approach aims to ensure that the most vulnerable individuals receive protection without needing to travel.

For the general public, a fixed vaccination point has been set up at the Mix Mateus supermarket, located on Avenida Liberdade. The service will be available from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. This location was chosen for its accessibility and high foot traffic, making it convenient for residents to get vaccinated during their evening routines.

The expanded campaign is not a one-day event. It will continue into the following week, with scheduled vaccination days at the fixed point on Tuesday, May 12, and Thursday, May 14. Furthermore, the Health Secretariat has announced that a major "D-Day" for influenza vaccination will be held this Saturday, May 9, signaling an intensive push to cover as many people as possible in a short timeframe.

According to the municipal administration, this strategic expansion of the campaign also aims to increase the overall vaccination coverage rate in Bayeux. A particular focus is being placed on families who were directly affected by the recent floods and inundations, who may face compounded health challenges. The initiative represents a proactive effort to mitigate potential disease outbreaks in the wake of the natural disaster.
