São Paulo Police Arrest Gang Defrauding Elderly in Card ScamThe Polícia Civil de São Paulo's specialized Grupo Armado de Repressão a Roubos e Assaltos (Garra) has concluded a major operation against a criminal gang accused of systematically defrauding elderly residents in the city.

The operation resulted in the execution of 26 arrest warrants and 34 search and seizure warrants. Authorities targeted the gang for a sophisticated payment fraud scheme that primarily victimized senior citizens.

How the Scam WorkedThe criminals deceived their victims during routine card payment transactions. According to the investigation, the gang would register a single purchase as multiple installments. For example, a legitimate purchase of R$100 would be recorded in the system as 24 separate installments of R$100 each, drastically inflating the total amount charged to the victim's account.

Scale of the FraudThe investigation revealed that over 100 people fell victim to this scheme. The estimated total financial loss to the victims is approximately half a million reais (R$500,000). The operation underscores the ongoing efforts by São Paulo's law enforcement to combat financial crimes targeting vulnerable populations.
