OFK Belgrado

OFK Beograd, founded in 1911 as BSK (Beogradski Sport Klub), is one of the oldest and most historically significant football clubs in Serbia. Originally established by students returning from Europe, the club quickly became a powerhouse of Yugoslav football. In 1950, it merged with another local side to form OFK Beograd (Omladinski Fudbalski Klub – Youth Football Club), a name reflecting its commitment to developing young talent. The club is based in the Karaburma district of Belgrade, a working-class neighborhood known for its passionate football culture. Their home ground, the Omladinski Stadium (also called the “Stadium of the Youth”), has a capacity of around 19,000 and has witnessed many historic moments, though it now shows its age. OFK Beograd boasts five Yugoslav First League titles (1931, 1933, 1935, 1936, 1939) – all won under the BSK name – making them one of the most successful pre-war clubs. They also lifted the Yugoslav Cup four times (1934, 1953, 1955, 1962). On the European stage, their greatest achievement came in the 1962–63 Cup Winners’ Cup, where they reached the semi-finals, defeating powerful sides like Porto and Napoli before losing to Tottenham Hotspur. They also made two appearances in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup quarter-finals. Legendary players include Dragoslav Šekularac, a charismatic playmaker who later became a cult figure; Ilija Petković, a clever midfielder and later national team coach; and goalkeeper Milutin Šoškić, one of the best in the world in the 1960s. The club’s youth academy has produced stars like Dušan Tadić, Branislav Ivanović, and Nemanja Matić, earning OFK a reputation as a breeding ground for talent. Playing style has traditionally emphasized technical skill, quick passing, and attacking flair, reflecting the “Belgrade school” of football. The fans, known as the “Plavi” (Blues), are fiercely loyal despite the club’s financial struggles in recent decades. They maintain a tight-knit community atmosphere, often filling the old stadium with chants. OFK’s biggest rival is Partizan, followed by Red Star, though matches against fellow Belgrade side Čukarički also carry local spice. Currently, OFK Beograd plays in the Serbian First League (second tier), having been relegated several times due to financial issues. The club is in a rebuilding phase, focusing on youth development to climb back up. An interesting fact: OFK was the first Serbian club to feature a black player, in the 1930s, and also pioneered floodlight football in Yugoslavia. Despite its humble present, OFK Beograd remains a cherished institution, a symbol of pre-war glory and post-war resilience.
