Zenit coach Alexander Aniukov analyzes winger Gustavo Mantuan's move to fullback, highlighting the challenges of positional change and the importance of defensive fundamentals.

Former Zenit Saint Petersburg player and current coach Alexander Aniukov has offered his perspective on the development of Gustavo Mantuan, who has successfully transitioned from a winger into a fullback. In an exclusive interview, Aniukov detailed the complexities involved in such a positional shift and the club's approach to the player's training.

Aniukov emphasized that converting a midfielder into a defender is a difficult task, particularly without a foundational background and experience in that specific role. He stressed the critical importance of youth football development in building these defensive skills from an early age. According to the coach, while modern football often highlights attacking contributions from defenders, the primary duty of a defender remains defensive solidity.

The Zenit coach acknowledged that different managers have varying requirements for players in defensive positions. Some deliberately pull midfielders back to enhance attacking potential, but Aniukov noted that this often comes at the expense of defensive stability, especially against strong opponents. He shared his personal view that a defender's first responsibility is to be reliable in their own half.

Aniukov also pointed out that sometimes players are moved to defense simply due to squad necessity, to cover a positional gap. Regarding Mantuan specifically, the coach praised the player's work ethic and receptiveness to coaching. He highlighted that Mantuan listens carefully and strives to implement the defensive principles demanded by the coaching staff.

The training effort is not isolated to Mantuan alone. Aniukov revealed that the club works with a dedicated group of 10-12 players, including defensive midfielders, on these specific defensive tasks. He expressed his satisfaction with the progress and the overall work being done in this area of the team's preparation.
