A critical transportation link between the Brazilian states of Tocantins and Pará has been severed indefinitely. The Ponte Transaraguaia, a major bridge on the BR-230 highway, has been completely closed to all traffic following a damning technical assessment that revealed severe structural risks.

The Department of National Infrastructure and Transportation (DNIT) confirmed the closure after a detailed structural evaluation report, conducted between February and April 2026, identified significant deterioration. The problems are concentrated in the pillars of the central span and the foundation blocks that support the main section over the Araguaia River.

In response to the critical findings, the DNIT has announced a clear path forward. The agency stated that the official tender notice for the bridge's complete reconstruction is scheduled for publication on June 26, 2026. This new structure will be built under the Program for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Structures (PROARTE) and will adhere to updated technical standards, aiming for greater load capacity and durability.

While the lengthy reconstruction process is prepared, the immediate priority is restoring some form of crossing. The DNIT has already initiated an emergency contracting process to secure a ferry service. This temporary solution aims to re-establish a vital connection for residents, commerce, and travelers in the region.

Motorists currently facing the closure have been advised to use alternative routes. The first option involves a significant detour via the BR-153 and BR-226 highways, passing through São Geraldo do Araguaia in Pará and Xambioá in Tocantins. A second route suggests a diversion at kilometer 59 of the BR-230, leading to a 15-kilometer dirt road to a ferry port in Esperantina, Tocantins.

A third, longer alternative requires drivers to travel from Marabá in Pará to the junction with the MA-125 highway in Maranhão, passing through several cities in that state before reaching the BR-010 north of Imperatriz. These detours add considerable time and distance to journeys between the two states.

The incident has prompted a broader review of infrastructure safety. The DNIT highlighted that it is implementing new directives for its bridge and viaduct maintenance program. Starting this year, preventive monitoring will be enhanced with the support of satellite technology and artificial intelligence. The goal is to accelerate diagnostics and prevent future infrastructure collapses.
