The final chapter in the tragic murder of açaí businessman Ednilson do Rego Pacheco is unfolding in a Belém courtroom. The last of the four individuals accused of his assassination is currently standing trial, marking a significant moment for a case that shocked the community of Icoaraci.
The defendant, Charles Pacheco, faces the jury with the prosecution's case being presented by Promotor de Justiça Nadilson Portilho Gomes. The core of the accusation is that Charles Pacheco actively participated in the criminal act that led to the death of the 46-year-old entrepreneur in April 2021.
However, the defense has mounted a counter-narrative. During his interrogation, Charles Pacheco's legal team argued that their client did not take part in the crime itself. Instead, they claim he was simply getting a ride in the vehicle used by the other perpetrators, one of whom was a police officer already convicted for the murder. This defense strategy aims to separate his actions from those of the condemned individuals.
The original crime was a brutal and swift execution. Ednilson do Rego Pacheco, a well-known local merchant who owned an açaí distribution business and a food store, was shot and killed as he arrived home from work in Icoaraci. Security camera footage captured the chilling moment when armed men exited a vehicle, approached his car, and fatally shot him without any apparent resistance from the victim. The attack was so sudden it left the local community in a state of profound shock.
The investigation moved quickly. On the very same day of the crime, Military Police officers managed to arrest four suspects. The identification and location of the individuals were aided significantly by the security camera footage. When apprehended, the suspects were found in a black HB20 vehicle along with firearms, ammunition, military clothing, and a balaclava, painting a clear picture of a premeditated operation.
Three of the co-accused have already faced justice. The group included Military Police officer Diego Dias, Municipal Guard Antenor Chagas, and security guard Antônio Carlos Pantoja. All three were previously tried and convicted in separate jury trials. Notably, Diego Dias, who was the owner of the car used in the crime, received a sentence of 22 years in prison.
Now, the spotlight is on Charles Pacheco, also identified as a security guard. His trial involves the presentation of evidence and the hearing of witnesses, as the court seeks to determine his level of involvement. The outcome will decide whether he is held accountable alongside his co-conspirators or if the defense's claim of mere presence will hold weight.
