Hospital Antônio Targino in Campina Grande suspended hemodialysis for over 80 SUS patients, citing supply shortages. The Municipal Health Secretariat disputes

Hospital Suspends Dialysis for 80+ SUS Patients in Campina GrandeCampina Grande, Paraíba – Hospital Antônio Targino has suspended its hemodialysis services for patients enrolled in Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS), a move that directly impacts more than 80 individuals requiring the critical treatment.

The hospital administration attributes the suspension to a lack of necessary medical supplies, placing the responsibility on the Municipal Health Secretariat of Campina Grande. However, the Secretariat has publicly contested this claim. According to officials, the municipality has already transferred R$1.8 million to the hospital in 2026 and maintains that the procurement and management of supplies are the hospital's contractual obligations.

The situation has escalated to involve higher authorities. The Public Ministry of the State of Paraíba (Ministério Público da Paraíba) has initiated an investigative procedure to examine the circumstances surrounding the service interruption. Concurrently, the Municipal Health Secretariat has issued a directive for the immediate reinstatement of the hemodialysis services.

The suspension of dialysis treatment poses a severe health risk to the affected patients, for whom consistent and timely therapy is a matter of life and death. The conflicting narratives between the hospital and the public health authority highlight a breakdown in the operational chain responsible for delivering essential care.

As of now, the services remain suspended, and the affected patients are left in a precarious situation awaiting a resolution between the institutional parties and the oversight of the Public Ministry.
