Manchester City secure their second Women's Super League title in history, ending a 10-year wait, after Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Brighton hands them the championship.

Manchester City have been crowned Women's Super League champions for the second time in their history, ending a decade-long wait for the title. The decisive moment came not on the pitch for City, but as a result of Arsenal's 1-1 draw against Brighton, which mathematically sealed the championship for the Manchester club.

The title race had been a tense affair, with Arsenal holding three games in hand over the league leaders going into their midweek fixture in Crawley. However, the Gunners needed to win all of those remaining matches to keep their hopes alive. City finished the season with 52 points and one game still to play, while Arsenal's maximum possible points tally stood at 53, making their draw with Brighton a fatal blow to their title aspirations.

This triumph marks a remarkable turnaround for Manchester City, who finished in a disappointing fourth place last season. That finish meant they missed out on Champions League qualification, a setback that ironically allowed them to concentrate fully on domestic competitions this campaign. Under the guidance of manager Andrée Jeglertz, who joined the club last summer, City have been a rejuvenated force throughout the season.

The club's success has been built on more than just managerial changes. Significant investment has been made in the leadership team overseeing the women's side, and the team is on the verge of opening a new state-of-the-art £10 million training facility dedicated to their development. These structural improvements have clearly paid dividends on the pitch.

Manchester City's attacking prowess has been a defining feature of their title-winning campaign. The team boasts three of the top six goalscorers in the WSL this season: Khadija Shaw, Vivianne Miedema, and Kerolin. Shaw has been particularly prolific, leading the league's scoring charts with an impressive 19 goals and four assists in 21 appearances.

The victory is especially sweet for City given their recent history in the league. Their only previous WSL title was won back in 2016, and they have since accumulated six runners-up finishes, including a second-place finish during the shortened Spring Series as the competition transitioned from its previous summer scheduling. This long-awaited second title is a testament to the club's sustained effort and investment.

While winning the league due to another team's result is not the most conventional way to celebrate a championship, City will undoubtedly cherish this achievement. Their season is not over yet, as they still have the opportunity to secure a domestic Double. The team faces Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday, having already been knocked out of the League Cup by the same opponents at the same stage earlier in the season.
