McLaren team principal Andrea Stella calls for finalizing discussions on new F1 power unit rules before the summer break to meet the 2028 deadline.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has issued a clear call to Formula 1 stakeholders, urging them to finalize discussions on the next generation of power unit regulations before the sport's summer break. The push comes as the anticipated hardware changes for the engines are now widely expected to be delayed until the 2028 season.

Stella explained that the complexity of the required modifications, particularly concerning battery size and managing increased fuel flow, presents a significant engineering challenge. He stated that the timeline leading into the 2027 season is simply too short for manufacturers to adequately develop and implement these substantial changes.

"I strongly urge that, if possible, this conversation be concluded before the summer break to be ready for 2028," Stella emphasized. His comments highlight the need for regulatory certainty to allow teams and engine suppliers to plan their development cycles effectively.

While acknowledging that McLaren has performed well in optimizing the current power unit within the existing rules, Stella believes more potential can be unlocked. However, he was clear that realizing this potential will require specific adjustments to the hardware specifications.

The current engine formula, which has been in place since the turbo-hybrid era began, is seen by many as needing evolution to better align with the sport's future goals, including sustainability and performance targets. Stella's comments suggest a consensus is forming around a 2028 start date for these new regulations.

The summer break provides a natural pause in the F1 calendar, making it a logical deadline for concluding major regulatory discussions. This would give all parties a clear framework heading into the second half of the season and the subsequent off-season.
