The Athletic's top 20 NHL unrestricted free agents for 2026 features three Russian stars: Sergei Bobrovsky (5th), Evgeni Malkin (6th), and Alexander Ovechkin

A new ranking from The Athletic has identified the top 20 NHL players set to become unrestricted free agents on July 1, 2026. The list provides an early look at the potential market landscape for the summer of 2026, highlighting key players who could be available to all 32 teams.

Three prominent Russian players feature in the ranking. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers is the highest-ranked Russian, securing the fifth position. Forward Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins follows closely in sixth place. Washington Capitals captain and legendary goal-scorer Alexander Ovechkin rounds out the Russian contingent at the 20th spot.

The top of the list is led by Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Darren Raddish, who is projected to be the most coveted free agent in the 2026 class. The ranking includes a mix of established veterans and younger talent across various positions, offering a snapshot of the depth available in two years.

Other notable names in the top 10 include Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Rasmus Andersson at number two and Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch at three. Anaheim Ducks blueliner John Carlson comes in at fourth, just ahead of Bobrovsky.

The list also features several players from the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, including Malkin, goaltender Stuart Skinner (9th), and forward Anthony Mantha (11th). The Columbus Blue Jackets have two representatives in the top 20: forward Charlie Coyle (7th) and Mason Marchment (12th).

Veteran forward Patrick Kane of the Detroit Red Wings is ranked 15th, while Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen sits at 17. The ranking concludes with Ovechkin, whose placement reflects his age and contract status at the time of potential free agency.

This early projection sets the stage for contract negotiations and team-building strategies over the next two NHL seasons. Teams will be watching the performance and health of these players closely as the 2026 free agency period approaches.
