The final matchday of Ligue 1 is upon us, and for three teams, it is a do-or-die battle to avoid the dreaded relegation playoff. Nice (16th), Auxerre (15th), and Le Havre (14th) all enter the last round uncertain of their top-flight status. With only one point separating some of them, every goal could be decisive. The playoff spot, which forces a two-legged tie against a Ligue 2 promotion winner, is a fate no club wants to face.

Nice hosts Metz at the Allianz Riviera, but their path to safety is not straightforward. The Eagles sit 16th, one point behind Auxerre and two behind Le Havre. While Metz is already relegated and has little to play for, Nice cannot rely solely on their own result. Even a win would not guarantee survival unless either Auxerre or Le Havre fails to win their respective matches. For Nice manager Francesco Farioli, the message is clear: "We must win and then hope for the best. We have no control over the other games."

Le Havre, meanwhile, travels to Lorient, a mid-table side with nothing left to play for. The Normans know that a victory at Stade du Moustoir would secure their place in Ligue 1 without needing to look over their shoulder. Le Havre's recent form has been patchy, but they have shown resilience. A draw could be enough if Auxerre loses and Nice wins, but relying on others is risky.

The trickiest task belongs to Auxerre, who must visit Lille, a team chasing a Champions League spot. Lille sits third and can secure direct UCL qualification with a win. Manager Paulo Fonseca is unlikely to rotate heavily, making the Stade Pierre-Mauroy a fortress. Auxerre, however, beat Nice last week to reignite their survival hopes. "We know it's a mountain to climb, but we have momentum," said an Auxerre insider.

For Nice, the mathematics are brutal. A win against Metz is essential, but they also need either Auxerre or Le Havre to drop points. If only one of their rivals loses, Nice would still finish 16th on goal difference if tied on points. Currently, Nice has a worse goal difference than both Le Havre and Auxerre, so even a draw for either rival could be enough to relegate Nice to the playoff spot.

Le Havre's advantage is that they control their destiny. A win at Lorient, who have lost their last two matches, would see them safe regardless. Lorient's only pride left is to finish in the top half, but they may lack urgency. "We are professionals and want to finish strong," said a Lorient source, but their motivation is questionable.

Auxerre's match at Lille is the most daunting. Lille has been formidable at home, and a Champions League spot is a huge incentive. However, Auxerre's recent victory over Nice has given them belief. If they can replicate that performance, they might cause an upset. Yet, any slip could seal their fate.

The relegation playoff itself is a brutal affair—a two-legged tie against a Ligue 2 club that has momentum from the promotion playoffs. Saint-Étienne, Red Star, or Rodez could be the opponent, all dangerous. Escaping that scenario is paramount.

History shows that teams in Nice's position often struggle. The pressure of needing other results to fall can be paralyzing. Meanwhile, Le Havre's simpler task gives them a psychological edge. Auxerre, with nothing to lose, might play with freedom.

In the end, the Ligue 1 finale promises high drama. Nice, with the easiest opponent on paper but the most complex math, faces a nervous afternoon. Auxerre and Le Havre will be glued to updates from other stadiums. When the final whistles blow, one of these three will face a playoff nightmare—or breathe a sigh of relief.
