Over 217,000 Voters in São Paulo Region Rush to Regularize Electoral TitlesOn the final day to regularize voter registration for the upcoming October elections, electoral offices in the São Paulo region of Brazil experienced a significant surge in activity. In São José dos Campos and Taubaté, long queues formed as residents scrambled to update their documents before the deadline.

According to officials, more than 217,000 residents across the region needed to regularize their electoral titles. The breakdown reveals that 110,102 voters had their titles canceled for failing to vote in the last three elections, while another 107,667 had their documents invalidated due to unupdated biometric data.

In São José dos Campos, the electoral office on Rua Paulo Setúbal saw continuous activity throughout the day. By late afternoon, around 4:30 PM, the line still extended around the block. "On the last day, the movement is always great, but today it is even greater. We estimate at least 20% to 30% more voters are seeking to regularize their titles, with over 300 people in line," said Ernandi Ramos, head of the São José electoral office.

A similar scene unfolded in Taubaté, where voters at the office on Avenida John F. Kennedy also faced lengthy queues that spilled outside. Electoral offices across the region operated from 9 AM to 5 PM on the final day. Officials assured that anyone still in line by 5 PM would be attended to, with potential scheduling for those who could not be served due to technical constraints.

Failure to regularize the electoral title by the deadline means voters will be unable to participate in the October elections. Under Brazil's Electoral Code, voters who do not vote and fail to justify their absence face penalties including fines and restrictions on obtaining passports, identity cards, enrolling in public exams, renewing registration at government-supervised educational institutions, and assuming or being paid for public office.

Residents can check the status of their electoral title by visiting the website of the Regional Electoral Court (TRE) and clicking on 'Consultas'.
