French cyclist Paul Manay won the first Giro d'Italia stage in Bulgaria, finishing 147km in 3:21:08. Russia's Alexander Vlasov placed 16th after a major crash

French cyclist Paul Manay claimed victory in the opening stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia, which took place in Bulgaria. Manay completed the 147-kilometer course from Nesebar to Burgas in a time of three hours, 21 minutes, and eight seconds.

The podium was completed by Danish rider Tobias Lund Andresen, who finished second, and American cyclist Ethan Vernon in third. Russian rider Alexander Vlasov ended the stage in 16th position.

The race was significantly impacted by a large crash that occurred just 700 meters from the finish line, affecting numerous riders in the peloton. This incident likely influenced the final standings and the dynamics of the sprint finish.

This year's Giro d'Italia marks the 109th edition of the prestigious Grand Tour. The race is scheduled to run from May 8th through May 31st. The first three stages are all being held in Bulgaria, with the opening stage beginning in the coastal town of Nesebar and concluding in the city of Burgas.

Over the course of the entire 21-stage race, the competing cyclists will cover a total distance of 3,459 kilometers. The event is one of cycling's three major three-week stage races, alongside the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.
