Heavy rain expected in Teresina and northern Piauí for Mother's Day weekend, with temperatures between 24°C and 32°C. The Intertropical Convergence Zone drives

The Mother's Day weekend in Piauí is set to be marked by significant rainfall, particularly affecting the capital Teresina and the northern regions of the state. Forecasts from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) indicate that while Friday, May 8th, carries a low probability of precipitation, Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th will see voluminous rains. This shift in weather patterns is attributed to the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ZCIT), a major atmospheric system that brings instability to the region.

In Teresina, residents can expect temperatures to range from a minimum of 24°C to a maximum of 32°C on Saturday. Sunday's forecast shows a similar minimum temperature, with the high dropping slightly to 31°C. The combination of warm temperatures and incoming moisture creates conditions conducive to the predicted heavy downpours. These rains are not expected to be prolonged but can be intense and localized.

The driving force behind this weather pattern is the ZCIT, as explained by meteorologist Sônia Feitosa from the State Secretariat for Environment and Water Resources (Semarh). She described the ZCIT as a band of clouds formed by the convergence of winds from the south and north near the equator. This system, when interacting with local instabilities, can trigger concentrated rainfall over short periods.

The consequences of such intense, brief rainfall events can be significant for urban areas. According to Feitosa, these conditions may lead to localized flooding, rapid rises in small streams, and temporary disruptions in more vulnerable urban zones. Residents in affected areas are advised to be prepared for these potential impacts throughout the weekend.

While the north and center-north of Piauí face the brunt of this instability, the southern part of the state is expected to experience more isolated showers. This regional variation highlights the complex weather dynamics at play across Piauí during this transitional period. The state is also beginning its shift towards the drier season, especially in the center-south and southern regions.

The forecast serves as a reminder for families planning Mother's Day activities to account for potential weather disruptions. Outdoor celebrations may need contingency plans, and travel within the state could be affected by the rainy conditions. The meteorological advice is to stay updated with the latest forecasts from official sources like Inmet.
