A significant weather shift is set to impact Santa Catarina for the Mother's Day weekend, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and the risk of adverse conditions. The change is driven by the advance of a cold front linked to an extratropical cyclone, which will intensify winds across the state.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a yellow-level alert for a temperature decline this Saturday, warning of a potential drop between 3°C and 5°C. This alert covers key regions including the Oeste, Serra, Vale do Itajaí, Norte, and Grande Florianópolis. Saturday will also see strong winds along the coast and persistent rainfall, particularly in the Grande Florianópolis, Vale do Itajaí, and Norte areas, with high volumes and a chance of lightning.
The cold will intensify further on Mother's Day itself, Sunday. Minimum temperatures in the higher-altitude areas of the Oeste and Serra regions could plunge to -3°C, with other cities in those areas seeing lows near 4°C. Along the coast, minimums are forecast between 4°C and 8°C. Conditions will be suitable for frost in the highlands of the Grande Oeste and Serra.
Weather conditions will be more stable on Sunday in the Oeste, Serra, and Litoral Sul. However, between Grande Florianópolis and the Norte, the day will begin with heavy cloud cover and possible rain during the early morning and morning hours. By the afternoon, the sun is expected to appear, but strong southerly winds will return to the coast, with gusts between 50 and 70 km/h.
The cold spell is not expected to relent quickly. Intense cold conditions are forecast to continue across Santa Catarina into the beginning of the following week, with no rain predicted for that period. The Defesa Civil has classified the risk for occurrences like localized flooding and flash floods as high, urging the population to stay informed of official warnings.
