Senator Ciro Nogueira's defense team denies any wrongdoing as the Brazilian Federal Police launch a new phase of 'Operação Compliance Zero', targeting alleged illicit payments and money laundering.

The defense team for Brazilian Senator Ciro Nogueira has firmly denied any involvement in illicit activities following a major new police operation. The statement comes as the Federal Police launched the fifth phase of 'Operação Compliance Zero,' a sweeping investigation into suspected improper payments and money laundering.

In a formal communication, the senator's lawyers stated that he is fully available to cooperate with the justice system. They emphasized his commitment to clarifying the situation and asserted he had no participation in the crimes under investigation. The operation, authorized by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), involves multiple search and seizure warrants across several Brazilian states.

Authorities executed warrants in Piauí, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and the Federal District. A temporary arrest warrant was also issued for Felipe Cançado Vorcaro, a relative of banker Daniel Vorcaro, who was taken into custody in Minas Gerais. The court also authorized the freezing of assets, rights, and funds totaling R$18.85 million.

The defense statement criticized the investigative measures as 'grave and invasive.' They argued that such actions were based on message exchanges attributed to third parties, which they believe could be premature. The lawyers contended that this issue requires serious reflection and strict legal oversight, a matter they expect the higher courts to address soon.

The comparison was drawn to the 'indiscriminate use of plea bargains,' suggesting a pattern of legal challenges. The STF decision, as reported, indicates the police identified alleged conduct by the senator in favor of a banker, in exchange for undue economic advantages. This case was noted as one with a particularly high volume of evidence to be examined.

Search and seizure warrants were also carried out at a location linked to the senator in Brasília. His brother, Raimundo Nogueira, was also named as a target of the searches. The operation underscores the ongoing judicial scrutiny of high-profile political figures in Brazil.
