Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch claims that at least four of Victor Wembanyama's 12 blocks in Game 1 of the NBA quarterfinal series were illegal, despite his team's 104-102 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch has raised concerns about the legality of several blocks made by San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama during the first game of their NBA quarterfinal playoff series. Finch stated that at least four of Wembanyama's 12 blocked shots in the contest were not legal under league rules.

The Timberwolves edged the Spurs 104-102 in a tightly contested matchup that went down to the wire. Wembanyama, the rookie sensation, put up an impressive defensive performance with a dozen blocks, but Finch believes some of those should have been called differently.

“I saw at least four of those blocks that were clearly illegal,” Finch told reporters after the game. “He was coming from the weak side and not making a legitimate play on the ball. That’s not how the rule is supposed to be applied.”

The NBA rules on blocking require defenders to establish legal guarding position and avoid verticality violations. Finch argued that Wembanyama’s long reach and timing allowed him to make plays that should have been whistled as fouls, but the officials let them go.

Wembanyama, who is known for his shot-blocking prowess, finished the game with 12 blocks to go along with 22 points and 10 rebounds. His performance was a key factor in keeping the Spurs competitive, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.

The Timberwolves’ victory gives them a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 2 is scheduled to take place in San Antonio, and Finch’s comments are likely to draw increased scrutiny from officials on Wembanyama’s defensive plays.

When asked about Finch’s accusations, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich declined to comment directly, saying only, “Victor plays within the rules. We’ll adjust as needed.”

The NBA has not issued any statement regarding Finch’s claims, and it remains to be seen whether the league will review the blocks in question. For now, the Timberwolves are focused on maintaining their momentum, while the Spurs aim to even the series.
