Universidade Luterana do Brasil in Manaus kicks off its 'Maio Solidário' campaign, a month-long initiative featuring food drives, free legal and health services, and community support inspired by the 2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods.

The Universidade Luterana do Brasil (ULBRA) campus in Manaus has officially launched its 'Maio Solidário ULBRA' campaign, a major social responsibility initiative aimed at supporting communities facing hardship. The launch event took place on Thursday evening at the university's Martinho Lutero auditorium, bringing together academic leaders, institutional partners, and guests to mark the beginning of a month dedicated to social action.

This campaign is designed to mobilize students, faculty, and partners for a series of educational and assistance activities throughout May. The core efforts include collecting essential donations such as non-perishable food items, clothing, and hygiene products. These drives are intended to gather resources that will be directly distributed to those in need.

Beyond material collection, the university will offer a range of free public services. These include workshops and professional consultations in areas like legal assistance, psychological support, and health services, leveraging the expertise from its various academic departments including health sciences, engineering, and architecture.

The campaign's focal point is scheduled for May 23, designated as 'Dia D' or 'Day D.' On this culminating day, all collected materials and the services provided will be channeled to designated social institutions. University leadership expressed hope that a successful drive could allow them to support two separate communities.

The inspiration for this initiative traces back to a profound institutional experience. During the historic floods that struck Rio Grande do Sul in 2024, ULBRA's campus in Canoas became a crucial shelter, hosting thousands of displaced people and mobilizing volunteers for humanitarian aid. That experience of crisis response and community solidarity directly inspired the creation of 'Maio Solidário' as a permanent commitment to social care and reconstruction.

According to the university's rector, Professor Maryana Antônia Braga Batalha Souza, the campaign represents more than just academic outreach; it is about personal formation and fulfilling a social purpose. She emphasized that such actions strengthen the university's bond with the Amazonian society and reflect the institution's legacy of partnership and service over more than three decades in the state.

The national launch of the campaign saw leadership highlight its goal to establish a continuous network of support for vulnerable populations. The initiative is framed as a direct response to the lessons learned during the 2024 disaster, aiming to institutionalize a culture of proactive social engagement and community partnership.
