Students occupy USP rectorate building, demanding better housing, increased scholarships, and campus maintenance after finding a pigeon nest in university

Students from various courses at the University of São Paulo (USP) continue to occupy the rector's building on the Butantã campus in São Paulo's West Zone. The occupation began on Thursday afternoon during a protest linked to the ongoing strike at São Paulo state universities.

The students are demanding the resumption of negotiations with USP rector Aluísio Segurado. Their core demands focus on improved student permanence policies, including increased scholarships, reform of university housing facilities, and better maintenance of campus infrastructure.

According to reports, students spent the night in tents outside the building and on mattresses inside. The university reportedly cut electricity and water to the rectorate building on Friday morning, a move confirmed by local media.

At least three police officers from the Special Police Actions Battalion (BAEP) are stationed inside the building with shields, while two Military Police vehicles patrol the surrounding area. Despite the police presence, no confrontations have been reported.

The protest gained momentum after students reported finding a pigeon nest inside the kitchen of the USP Residential Complex (Crusp) on April 15. This discovery highlighted the deteriorating conditions of student housing facilities.

Henrique Pupio, director of the União Estadual dos Estudantes de São Paulo, stated that the rectorate has shown unwillingness to yield to the movement's pressure. "We believe this intransigence has led to increased tension that can only be resolved through reopening dialogue with students," Pupio said.

Approximately 400 students participated in the initial demonstration, with footage showing protesters jumping over the entrance gate and breaking glass doors. Police officers with shields observed from a distance but did not intervene.

The Faculty of Law is currently holding assemblies to decide whether to continue participating in the strike. Student representatives emphasize that only through dialogue can the situation be resolved, calling for the reopening of renegotiation talks.
