Founded in 1922 by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) following the partition of Ireland, the competition was established as a direct counterpart to the Irish Cup, which continued under the jurisdiction of the Irish Football Association (IFA) in Northern Ireland. The first final was held in 1922, with St. James's Gate defeating Shamrock Rovers 1-0. The competition follows a traditional single-elimination knockout format, open to all clubs affiliated with the FAI, from the top-tier League of Ireland Premier Division down to intermediate and junior non-league sides.
