The tournament quickly attracted star power, with famous players like Lionel Messi (briefly, during a special guest appearance for Newell's Old Boys in a friendly context), Sergio Agüero, and many of the league's top talents competing for the trophy. The competitive landscape was intense, though the tournament's existence was short-lived. The inaugural 2019 edition was won by Tigre, a remarkable achievement for a club that had just been promoted. The 2020 edition was suspended and ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following disputes over broadcasting rights and the league structure, the Copa de la Superliga was discontinued after just one completed season, with its concept later influencing the creation of the "Copa de la Liga Profesional."
