FIA and F1 teams have agreed on a 2027 engine rule change, shifting the power balance to 60% combustion and 40% electric. The move increases ICE output by 50kW.

A significant shift in Formula 1's power unit philosophy is on the horizon. The FIA, Formula One Management, teams, and engine manufacturers have reached a preliminary agreement on a package of changes to the sport's engine regulations, with a target implementation date of the 2027 season.

The core of the proposed changes involves a deliberate rebalancing of the power split between the internal combustion engine and the electric hybrid system. Currently, the power output is roughly a 50/50 split. The new agreement aims to shift this balance decisively in favor of the traditional combustion engine.

Under the new framework, the power contribution from the internal combustion engine would increase by approximately 50 kilowatts. This boost would be achieved through an allowance for a higher fuel flow rate, enabling the 1.6-liter V6 turbo engines to produce more power.

Conversely, the power output from the Energy Recovery System (ERS) would be reduced by a corresponding 50 kilowatts. This adjustment effectively scales back the electric component's role in the overall powertrain performance.

The net result of these adjustments would establish a new power ratio of approximately 60% from the internal combustion engine and 40% from the electrical system. This represents a clear strategic move to enhance the prominence and audible character of the combustion engine within the sport's future.

It is important to note that this agreement is preliminary. The FIA statement clarifies that finalizing these rules will require further detailed discussions within technical working groups involving all relevant teams and power unit manufacturers.

Once this collaborative refinement process is complete, the finalized package of regulatory changes will be submitted for a formal vote by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. This step is necessary to officially ratify the new technical regulations for the 2027 season and beyond.
